Study the platform VII of XXXII

Hi, this is Marsha from
Come study the platform with me from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy in the chapter called Science of Being, page 330. We’ll take one part of the platform each day for the next 32 days. We’ll read the words Mrs. Eddy has given us. Then, I’ll share with you some ideas that have come to me and then you get to share your ideas in the blog online in the comment area below.
If you know anyone who might like to participate in this exercise, please forward this to them to have them subscribe to my website.
If you miss some, you can catch up by going to the menu at the top
called “Study the Platform“.

Marsha:  I just wanted to mention that the next four videos on the platform are all about the divine Trinity.  And the last three actually go and break it down to the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost.  So it will be a good study. Thank you for the comments you have made thus far.   Your comments add depth to the study.

VIII. (Divine trinity) Life, Truth, and Love constitute the triune Person called God, — that is, the triply divine Principle, Love. They represent a trinity in unity, three in one, — the same in essence, though multiform in office: God the Father-Mother; Christ the spiritual idea of sonship; divine Science or the Holy Comforter.
These three express in divine Science the threefold, essential nature of the infinite. They also indicate the divine Principle of scientific being, the intelligent relation of God to man and the universe.  S&H 331: 26

Marsha: Remembering Tenet #2 that speaks to the Trinity, it reads…

We acknowledge and adore one supreme and infinite God.  We acknowledge His Son, one Christ; the Holy Ghost or divine Comforter; and man in God’s image and likeness. S&H 497: 5-8

Here’s a little history…

In the 300s Common Era (CE) Constantine converted to Christianity and Rome became a Christian empire. In 325 CE The Council of Nicaea, consisted of about 300 bishops and deacons and was formed for two reasons:

  1. To formally declare Arius’ view heretical because he did not believe that Christ Jesus was God, but the Son of God.
  2. Opportunity to form a creed to come together as one faith.

To believe Jesus Christ was God= 1 God, 3 Persons, Jesus declared to be God of God and that God is “human”.  It contained a “Personal” Trinity, and many of those selected to attend the Council reservedly agreed to the “three persons in one God”, resulting in God being made manlike.  Mrs. Eddy writes, “Human philosophy has made God manlike. Christian Science makes man Godlike.”  S&H 269:9-10

  1. John Gordon says

In thinking about the trinity, I find a useful analogy is the shining light bulb in an otherwise empty room. You could say that all there is is the bulb, but one could also say that there is light radiating from the bulb and a law of harmony that governs this reflection, or expression. The bulb, the light rays, and the law are inseparable, hence one in essence, multiform in office. Even the statement, “All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation,” declared very good, can be viewed in the context of the trinity.

It is also neat to ponder this 3-way pairing (Life as Father-Mother, Truth as the Christ, Love as the Comforter) manifested in other “triples.” For example, the 3 humans, Moses (paired with Life), Jesus (with Truth), and Mrs. Eddy (with Love), or, equivalently, the 3 books, The Old Testament, The New Testament, and Science and Health. You can also put together triplets of attributes, such as light for Life, the Word for Truth, and law for Love. It is fun to see Mrs. Eddy do this in our textbook, grouping words such as health, holiness, and immortality (attributes of Love, Truth, and Life, respectively) annihilating the erroneous, unreal threesome of sickness, sin, and death.

  2. What a relief to know that God is not man like !!
